Perhaps the clue is in the company's name: You? Me! Me! (U? Me! Me!)
I recently had the experience of trying to connect power. I was told that if I needed one pole, the cost would amount to about Shs600k (including a security deposit). However, when the Umeme people came, they decided I needed 3 poles. The regional office in Mbale would not handle it because they only deal with a 1-pole service so the connection would be referred to Kampala, and the cost would be around Shs4m. I protested that the cost should be less than the cost of 3 poles, due to economies of scale, but was told that is how Umeme operates.
My response was to tell the Umeme officials that since I already had a generator, I would simply buy petrol with the Shs4m they were demanding for the connection, and would not suffer their load shedding. The Umeme officials then asked if I could raise Shs2.5m for connection..........................!!!!!!!!!!
What I want to ask is: is Umeme working against electrification of the country? Their policies and practises do not make sense to me!

That is the in full i can put for UMEME.
What is make UMEME the most doubted service provider is that when the disconnect you this month, they will live a bill in their box next month and will still bring one the following months showing high consumption of power yet you were disconnected months ago.
The contract should be revised and put right. Who should take over, we need to prepare their exist first. I say not now,but in future if the continue failing |
