More than 41,000 people have already voted no in a campaign against a new pornographic channel on DSTV, trade union Solidarity said on Wednesday.

"A total of 41,381 South Africans have already said no since Solidarity's Helping Hand campaign for 'No to Pornography-campaign' started in February," Helping Hand spokeswoman Lindie Strydom said.

Solidarity planned to hand over all protest messages to DSTV MultiChoice soon, to indicate that some South Africans were opposed to the idea.

Strydom said Helping Hand would also hand a report to the company on facts about pornography in South Africa.

These included studies that have shown that 77 percent of molesters of boys and 87 percent of molesters of girls used pornography and acted out what they saw on their victims.

Helping Hand said "perversity" would also be encouraged by pornography. Research had further shown it was not true that rape and molestation decreased if pornography was freely available.

MultiChoice had indicated its own research on the issue was finished and the results would be made public within the next two weeks.
