Otunnu wins race for UPC presidency

Former UN Undersecretary General Olara Otunnu, has won the Uganda People's Congress (UPC) presidency in a contest that attracted 8 candidates.

The win automatically makes Otunnu one of the presidential contenders in the 2011 election.

Otunnu garnered 623 votes against 108 for Jimmy Akena the son of the party's late president Dr. Apolo Milton Obote.

The rest of the candidates had under 40 votes each with one having only two votes. They are Yona Kanyomozi, Joseph Ochieno, Sospater Akwenyu, Sam Luwero, Henry Mayega and Dickson Opul.

During the campaigns, the candidates openly discussed the issues affecting the 50-year old party.
