DAVID Musunga Ivita, the Kenyan student of Kampala International University (KIU) who was stabbed to death on Wednesday, had dreams and studied hard to contest for a top political position, friends and family have revealed.

Francis Wambua, his close friend and former schoolmate at Masinga Boys’ Secondary School in Kenya, told The New Vision yesterday that Musunga was hardworking and had a big heart.

“He has been performing well at the university and we expected him to get at least a second class upper degree,” Wambua said.

Musunga, 24, was allegedly stabbed in the throat by his girlfriend, Jane Nyiha, a fellow Kenyan student, with whom they had cohabited for years.

The incident occurred in Kansanga, a Kampala suburb, where the couple rented a room. He died at the university clinic where his friend, David Mwendua, had rushed him.

Wambua said the couple had since last year had frequent fights. “I told Musunga to leave the girl. But he loved her so much,” he said.

According to Wambua, Musunga’s father is a high school teacher in Kenya, while his mother is a peasant farmer.

The family lives in Makutano-chumbi village, Masinga sub-county in Machakos district of north-eastern Kenya.

Sources close to the family said the bereaved father was shocked and he cried when leaders of the KIU Kenyan Students’ Union telephoned him soon after the incident. Musunga was the only boy in a family of four.

Meanwhile, Nyiha remains detained at Kabalagala police station, according to the Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba.

Nabakooba said Nyiha’s file was expected to be forwarded to the directorate of public prosecutions today.
She said the Police had charged her with murder.

Musunga’s body is at Mulago hospital where it was taken for a postmortem examination. The university management and the Kenya High Commission are co-ordinating preparations to return the body to Kenya.
