ABOUT 12,174 people have been displaced in five districts in the Rwenzori-Kigezi region following landslides and floods that hit the region last week.
Kabarole district was the most affected with 3,873, followed by Kasese (3,640), Kisoro (2,324), Bundibugyo (1,532) and Kabale (805), according to a situation analysis report by the Uganda Red Cross Society.
The disaster preparedness ministry yesterday said it had dispatched 200 bags of maize flour and 60 bags of beans.
The minister, Prof. Tarsis Kabwegyere, said more food and non-food supplies would follow.
The Red Cross and the district leaders mobilised 300kg of cassava flour and 70 blankets, which were distributed to the affected families.
The Red Cross secretary general, Michael Nataka, advised the public to heed the warning messages about the pending disasters in their areas.
The disaster preparedness ministry early this month warned that 500,000 people from the Rwenzori and Kigezi regions in western Uganda were at risk of landslides and floods.
