THE Kasese district public accounts committee has given its town clerk 90 days to recover sh64m given to town council officials as advance for council activities.
According to the Auditor General’s report of the financial year 2005/6, there were irregular expenditure by the town clerk, Wilson Musabe.
Musabe and other town council officials were on March 9 appearing before the committee, chaired by Jethro Mbayahi, to answer queries raised in the Auditor General’s report.
Mbayahi noted that the council had lost a lot of money through ‘irresponsible accounting officers’.
He said Musabe had proved incompetent by failing to implement the committee’s recommendations.
“We give you 90 days to recover the money or else you will be arrested,” Mbayahi charged.
Appearing before the same committee, the town council chairman, Cosmas Byaruhanga, was also ordered to refund over sh1m he got from the treasury but never accounted for.
Mbayahi told Byaruhanga to make a statement with the Police since he had exceeded the recommended one year to account for the funds.
He was also accused of failing to oversee the implementation of the committee’s recommendations.
