THE First Lady, Janet Museveni, has called on the youth to support the safe motherhood campaign.
Mrs Museveni, who is the patron of the White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood, noted that several women in Uganda still suffer and die from preventable pregnancy-related complications, the majority of whom being young mothers.
Her remarks were contained in a speech read by Beatrice Rwakimari, the Ntungamo district Woman MP, at celebrations to mark the international Women’s Day at Kyamate playground on Tuesday.
Rwakimari received the White Ribbon Alliance Convoy to Kampala, a project launched by the White Ribbon Alliance to commemorate the 100th year of the international Women’s Day.
A press release from the First Lady’s office stated that Mrs Museveni cautioned the youth against indulging in sex before their bodies are physically ready and to be advocates of safe motherhood in their communities.
She also appealed to women in the district to go for cancer screening at Itojo Hospital.
The campaign aims at raising awareness and support for safe motherhood through the use of art, music, dance, drama and film.
It comprises a team from the White Ribbon Alliance, musicians and a film crew who are on a countrywide mobilisation of youth, urging them to take part.
The campaign has been carried out in Masaka, Kabale and Mbarara districts.
It has also been running in Jinja and Tororo districts and will wind up in Kampala tomorrow.
Present at the celebrations were local musicians Bobi Wine and Henry Tigan, who entertained the youth with educational messages.
