MBARARA district inspector of drugs Dr. Edema Isuba has attributed the increasing circulation of expired drugs in the district to private clinics, which employee unskilled people as nurses.

Isuba said the so-called nurses are given false certificates to start work.

He said many of them open drug shops they are not competent enough to run.

“We have clinics which are training nurses illegally and giving them false certificates. Some of them after training start drug shops yet they don’t know drug classes,” he said.

Isuba made the remarks while addressing journalists at his office recently.

He said only enrolled nurses or midwives are allowed to run drug shops.

He said cases of expired drugs for both animals and people are many in Kashari county in Rubaya, and Bugamba in Rwampara county.

With the help of the Police, he said, his office had confiscated expired drugs and arrested perpetrators.

He, however, added that many of the culprits disappeared after being released on Police bond.

Isuba said people who want to run a drug shop must get a license from the National Drug Authority and also have the required qualifications.
