THE freezing of Bundibugyo district accounts by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has affected service delivery in the district.

In November last year, URA froze Bundibugyo accounts after the district failed to remit sh1b for Pay as You Earn tax from 2001 to 2008.

Residents of Bundibugyo town council said some of the accounts URA blocked contained funds for a project that was to extend water to the town council and other surrounding villages.

Manxim Nyama, a resident of Katimbo, said women walk over five kilometres in search of water.

Richard Yabo of Bunyabara was concerned that cholera might break out in the area, especially in the rainy months of October and November.

Yabo said the villages of Bunyabara, Kanyambimbi, Kakoga, Bumadu and Bunya get water from Bumya stream, which is unsafe.

But the Bundibugyo district water engineer, Peter Opolot, said the withheld money was for maintaining the existing water points and not for the construction of new ones.
