A number of contestants who lost in the recent NRM primaries have threatened to stand as independents in the 2011 general elections.

This is exactly what the current system of choosing party flag-bearers was meant to avert.

Many people deciding to run as independents has shown me that Ugandans view holding political responsibilities/offices as jobs or money-making ventures.

This belief must change if we are to succeed in fighting the now outrageous corruption plague.

Politics should be viewed as a voluntary undertaking by people who already have their businesses and professions through which they have made (or make) money.

People who join politics should do it as a way of giving back to their people by leading and guiding them.

Such people can always get back to their undertakings should their bid for political office fail.

So, the members of the NRM party who lost in the primaries should go back to their professions and businesses rather than putting up fights that are detrimental to both the party and the nation.
