THE Uganda Revenue Authority has frozen the Kitgum town council accounts over non-remittance of taxes, district and town council officials have confirmed.

John Komakech Ogwok, the district chairman, said the closure was due to failure to remit value added tax for the past six months worth sh400m.

He blamed the mishap on financial indiscipline of leaders, saying the town council officials always take allowances of up to five nights on purported official duties.

The accounts frozen include that of conditional grants, donor funds and central government transfers. Rhoda Oroma, the acting town clerk, told an emergency council meeting on Friday that the taxman had already deducted sh338m from the accounts and would deduct sh109m more to recover what it is owed them by the district.
