Mwesigwa is leaving Iceland and is destined for China

CRANES defender Andy Mwesigwa has signed a $240000 (sh490m) two-year contract with Chinese premier league club Chongquing Lyfan.

James Bakama reports that Mwesigwa, who will be earning $10,000 a month, has concluded talks with the club and is ready for action for the 2010 Chinese league that kicks-off on March 22.

The former SC Villa defender is shifting to Asia after a three year stay in Iceland where he has featured for top league side IBV FC since 2006.

He has been earning $4000 (sh8.2m) a month. A source close to Mwesigwa said his new benefits include a house, feeding and travel home for him and his wife.

“He is very excited. It’s definitely his best deal ever,” said one of his confidants. Mwesigwa, 26, started off his career with Villa in 2002. He made his international debut in 2003.

He has been regular on the Cranes for the past three African Nations Cup qualifiers. The Ugandan’s new club is a mid table side with the 58,680 seater Chongquing Olympic Sports Centre as its home ground.

The Chinese Football Association Super League, commonly known as the CSL, is the highest tier of professional football in China.

Unlike in many top European leagues, the Chinese league starts in March and ends in either November or December.
