NEARLY three months after a twin bomb blast killed and injured tens of football fans in Kampala, FUFA House was thrown in panic yesterday morning when locals discovered a bomb near the federation offices in Mengo.

It was found next to city businessman Salim Uhuru’s residence – a place the Police said used to house an army shop several years ago.

Police from Old Kampala station, who cordoned off the area for hours before taking away the bomb said that it was still capable of causing damage up to the range of 500 square metres.

FUFA publicist Rogers Mulindwa said that the bomb scared football officials at Mengo as rumours spread that it was planted in their headquarters.

“FUFA was thrown into a panic when news of the bomb just opposite the headquarters spread. Information had also started going around that the bomb was inside the federation offices. But Police restored calm,” Mulindwa said yesterday.

Kampala metropolitan regional Police commander Andrew Sorowen confirmed the incident but down played it saying: “this was an old rusty thing (bomb) which I think belonged to the army. There is no reason for scare.”

Recently the federation general assembly condemned the July 11 terrorist bomb attacks that left 76 dead and many injured at Kyadondo rugby club and Kabalagala while watching the World Cup finals in south Africa. The assembly approved erection of a monument in memory of the dead.

The federation dedicated their technical centre built with the help of world soccer governing body FIFA in Njeru for the monument.
