Abstinence not a magic bullet

ABSTINENCE is preached in churches and mosques but how many take it seriously? The use of condoms is not encouraged at all especially among the Catholics and born-agains, yet some students do not abstain.

Student leaders and the university administration should educate students more about HIV/AIDS and encourage use of condoms in case someone must.
Sexually active students can benefit from sensitisation.

The universities should provide distribution centres for condoms as it was done at MUK about one and a half years ago.

Infected students need counselling and I am glad it is done at the MUK hospital. Professional counsellors observe confidentiality, something that a student might not find in prayer meeting.

Abstinence is the best message to be preached to students but it has one unanswered question.

Can all students abstain? If some people who wed in church can be unfaithful, how difficult is it to break the abstinence promise? I am not justifying unfaithfulness or breaking abstinence covenants but I believe in laying all options on the table.

We need more awareness concerts and seminars at the university, where ABC should be preached.

Avail condoms to university students and professional counseling should be encouraged at the university. HIV positive Students should form groups to help them deal with social stigma.
