THREE NRM members, including a Ugandan of Indian descent, are eyeing the post of the national treasurer.

The treasury is one of the most sensitive and important positions in any political party.

The aspirants are Kaweesi Ndawula, the incumbent, Arvind Patel the national treasurer of the NRM entrepreneurs’ league and Amelia Kyambade, the former Principal Private Secretary to President Yoweri Museveni.

Ndawula, Patel and Kyambadde are forces to reckon with in their own capacities and if experience was the only factor determining who takes the seat, the three would end up in a draw.

Kyambadde has held the office of the Principal Private Secretary for years until she resigned recently to join elective politics.

She wants the Mawokota North Parliamentary seat currently occupied by Peter Mutuluuza.

When Kyambadde resigned, State House organised a special party for her, during which President Museveni commended her for the years she served at State House.

The President also blessed her for any political office she wanted to go for.

The kind of trust and support Kyambadde enjoys from the President makes her a difficult person to defeat in any political race.

However, the incumbent, Ndawula, will not be easy to dislodge.

Patel is also a man not to undermine. Since 1975, he has been staying in East Africa, studying the politics of the countries in the region.

He boasts of having numerous local and international connections, which he can exploit to benefit NRM.

Patel is concerned that the gap between political leaders and the masses is big, which he said has affected development.

He promises to use India’s experience to develop Uganda. Besides contesting for the post of the NRM party treasurer, Patel is also eyeing the Kampala Central MP seat currently occupied by Elias Lukwago of the Democratic Party.
